Glyndwr University students will have awoken today and checked their e-mail to see quite a surprise. An apparent Chester FC fan had been able to hack into the School of Undergraduate studies and e-mail the entirety of the student population with an anti-Wrexham AFC chant.

The University were quick to ensure students that the breach was in fact, a website that could mask itself and e-mail a single mailing list and that no personal details of students had been compromised nor had the e-mail come from an internal source within the office.
A second e-mail sent to students, this time actually from the School of Undergraduate Studies said: “It is possible that an unauthorised and inappropriate email has been sent to your Glyndwr University email account, that appears to be from the School for Undergraduate Studies Office.
If you have received such an email, please disregard it, and be assured that it has not been authorised by the UG School or the University. Please accept our apologies for you having received an inappropriate message, and be assured we are investigating the matter as a priority.”
An update on the University Facebook page said that the initial e-mail was from a website that was able to send an e-mail acting as another client and that IT services have acted to make sure that such an incident won’t happen again.
The rivalry between Wrexham and Chester is one of the most fierce in football but the most recent outing between the two teams ended in a disappointing 0-0 draw.
Have you ever received a rogue e-mail from University or work? What has been your favourite?
